TOKYO - February 1, 2023 - Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (TSE Prime: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced the installation of solar power systems on server and administrative buildings at its Shiroi Data Center Campus (Shiroi, Chiba Prefecture; "Shiroi DCC"), where data center services have been provided since May 2019. The solar system went into operation in February 2023. The system capacity of the installed solar panels is expected to be approximately 373 MWh in annual electric power generation, amounting to around 3% of the Shiroi DCC server building needs.

IIJ operates the Shiroi DCC as facility infrastructure for its own cloud and network services, and as a center for colocation/housing services for the IT equipment of its customers. For data centers, which use large amounts of electricity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions (carbon neutrality) is an urgent matter. Steps toward this end taken by IIJ to date include introducing direct outdoor air cooling systems with their high efficiency, using AI for air conditioning control, and making use of lithium-ion storage batteries, all aimed at optimizing power use efficiency.
The on-site solar power system, introduced as part of IIJ initiatives for making data centers carbon neutral, is intended to boost renewable energy introduction while also making cost of electric power more economical and stable.
Installation of this system was partially funded by an FY2021 program of Japan's Ministry of the Environment for subsidizing measures taken to control carbon dioxide emissions.

Equipment Overview

  • Installed location: Rooftops of server and administrative buildings
  • Solar panel capacity: 336 kWp
  • Electric power generation (expected): 373 MWh (annual)
  • Start of operation: February 2023

  • Note:This equipment was introduced as a utility service of Kanden Energy Solution Co., Inc. (Kenes).

Future plans call for installation of solar power systems also at the Matsue Data Center Park, a data center operated by IIJ in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, and on the phase two server building of the Shiroi DCC scheduled to go into operation in July 2023.

Committed to meeting the carbon neutrality targets in the Japanese government's Green Growth Strategy, IIJ will continue introducing the latest energy-saving technology, procuring Green Power, and introducing renewable energy, actively working to realize carbon neutral data centers and to combat climate change.
