TOKYO - September 15, 2021 - Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced that it has completely revamped the service configuration of its IIJ GIO Infrastructure P2 (GIO P2), a cloud service which has been providing under the concept of combining the best of public and private clouds. The resulting new next-generation IaaS will be called "IIJ GIO Infrastructure P2 Gen.2 (GIO P2 Gen.2)" and will make it easier to migrate to the cloud from on-premise systems. The new service will be available from October 1, 2021.
By combining the advantages of ease and convenience that come with a public cloud and the flexibility that comes with a private cloud, this service offers VMware-based hosted private clouds to which customers can apply the same design concept of their existing systems without modification. As such, the service supports even customers who have been hesitant to make the move to the cloud in taking their on-premise systems to the cloud.

As trends continue to propel digital transformation forward, many companies have been making progress in moving their systems to the cloud. Public clouds in particular have become more widely known for the features and convenience they offer. Nevertheless, most of companies struggle with both correctly understanding the peculiarities of public clouds and adapting the specific system architectures. Therefore the hurdles are so high for such companies to migrate the existing on-premises environments to the cloud. In fact, less than 20% of companies have transitioned 50% or more of the servers used by their systems to the cloud, according to a survey by IIJ.
IIJ has been providing a packaged VMware platform service with GIO P2- as a "private cloud without ownership," since 2015, and it has proved popular among customers. The new GIO P2 Gen.2 has been developed as a new, further evolved service that makes it easier to migrate from on-premise systems thanks to feedback from customers and the know-how IIJ has gained through offering the GIO P2 service.

Features of GIO P2 Gen.2

VMware-based hosted private cloud for easy migration

By using VMware as a virtualization platform, customers can bring the same design concept and operational systems they use for on-premise environments to the cloud, making it easier to migrate to the cloud from on-premise VMware environments. In addition to providing all the tools needed for migration, IIJ also offers a lineup of support services provided by its deeply experienced dedicated engineers to make the transition smooth.

Allows the same flexibility and freedom in system configuration as a public cloud (Flexible Server Resources only)

Rather than subscribing on a server unit basis as with typical private clouds, customers can instead subscribe to the service on a resource unit basis, using as little as 1vCPU/4GB memory from the virtual resource pool, which allows them to start small and configure a flexible system. In addition, in contrast to conventional hosted private cloud services, IIJ manages the hypervisor, which means that customers do not need to handle work like software updates for vulnerabilities on the customer side, which significantly lightens the burden of operating these systems.

High scalability with IIJ services

This service can be linked to IIJ's various services to scale up system environment to meet changing demand. Various managed services that supply the components needed in enterprise IT environments, such as file servers, Active Directory, databases, etc., and network services that provide private connections with other public clouds are examples of services that GIO P2 Gen.2 can link to. It can also be used in anticipation of future migration to the public cloud.

Service lineup

IIJ will be offering two different menus of the service. The first is Flexible Server Resources, which allows customers to create a system environment by freely choosing the resources to use much as with a private cloud. The second is Dedicated Server Resources, an option that allows customers to access a VMware vCenter Server with full permissions, the same as offered in the GIO P2 VW series.
