IIJ to Become an Associate member of Study Group 3, an expert group of the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector

May 21, 2018

TOKYO-May 21, 2018-Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced that, in April, it became an Associate member of the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) Study Group 3 (SG3).

ITU-T is the standardization arm of ITU-a specialized agency under the United Nations. As a part of ITU-T, SG3 conducts studies on international roaming, tariffs, and other economic and policy issues related to international telecommunications. SG3 also carries out research from economic and policy perspectives on the variety of new services (mobile financial services, OTT, and others) that have accompanied the rapid development of telecommunications and ICT in recent years.

IIJ decided to join ITU-T SG3 to further develop new services, including the MVNO field, and to achieve ITU's mission to "connect the world." Being a member of SG3 will allow IIJ to participate in discussions on international telecommunications policies, based on the insight gained through its MVNO business, and to contribute to related studies from its perspective as a Japanese MVNO.
In 2008, IIJ entered the MVNO business, and in March 2018, it launched its new Full MVNO(*) services. Thus far, IIJ has engaged in MVNO-related policy discussions in Japan, both as an operator and through the Telecom Services Association's MVNO committee, the Japanese MVNO's industry organization.

IIJ will continue to grow by contributing to Japanese and international society through its telecommunications technology.

  • (*)Full MVNO refers to mobile virtual network operators that provide services using base stations and other wireless access facilities from other mobile network operators (MNO), operating as independent MNOs with their own MNC and IMSI (**), which are the identifiers for international mobile communications.
    • (**)MNC and IMSI: Mobile Network Code (MNC) is the international identifier for MNOs, while International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) is the number that identifies telecommunications users. Having specific identifiers allows equal connectivity with MNOs worldwide.
