IIJ4U and IIJmio Mail Services for Individuals are Now Compatible with IPv6 Networks
July 28, 2010
TOKYO--July 28, 2010--Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, announced the completion of IPv6 network compatibility for the mail services on the IIJ4U and IIJmio Internet connectivity services for individuals as of July 27, 2010.
Starting last year IIJ embarked on a project to make the IIJ4U mail service, IIJmio Safety Mail, and IIJmio Personal Domain services compatible with IPv6 networks. In August 2009, IIJ implemented IPv4/IPv6 dual stack (*) compatibility on mail servers of IIJ and other companies, and customers on the IPv4 IIJ4U and IIJmio services could send and receive e-mail to IPv4/IPv6 networks.
This most recent project has implemented IPv4/IPv6 dual stack compatibility for mail servers that customers connect to directly. This enables users to exchange e-mail with IPv4/IPv6 users from within existing IPv4 networks as well as from IPv6 networks. There are no configuration adjustments required for existing users as a result of this project. Even if customers migrate to an IPv6 network environment, they will not have to change anything to continue to use the mail services.
IIJ pioneered IPv6 usage with the introduction of the IPv6 Tunneling Service in August 1999, and the company has implemented IPv6 in a variety of network enterprise applications. IIJ will continue to leverage its expertise in IPv6 applications to increase the usefulness of the Internet.
- (*) Dual stack technology allows simultaneous usage of IPv4 and IPv6 protocols without concern for the differences in the IPv4 and IPv6 environments.
