IIJ Makes the IIJ Managed Firewall Service IPv6 Compatible

October 01, 2009

TOKYO--October 1, 2009--Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced the addition of IPv6 (*1) next-generation Internet protocol compatibility as a basic feature of the IIJ Managed Firewall Service.

With the IIJ Managed Firewall Service, an IIJ engineer remotely operates and administrates firewall devices installed on the customer's premises on behalf of the customer. This comprehensive service includes firewall device rental, configuration, operation, monitoring, and maintenance, reducing the customer's administrative overhead and cost, as well as protecting the customer's network environment from a wide range of threats.

Originally, the IIJ Managed Firewall Service was capable of IPv4 communications, but with the addition of this new feature, a single firewall device can control communications in both IPv4 and IPv6. Firewall configuration is performed by IIJ based on the directives specified by the customer, so the customer can easily build an IPv6 environment without the burden of reconfiguring the network and network devices. (*2)

Since IIJ introduced Japan's first IPv6 commercial trial service in 1999, the company has been leading the industry in the adoption and promotion of IPv6. Starting in 2009, IIJ is aggressively implementing IPv6 capabilities throughout its services and network equipment, and with the introduction of this new feature, all Internet related functions -- from the Internet connection to the routers and firewalls-- are IPv6 ready.

IPv4 address will continue to be assigned for some years to come, but they are expected to become gradually scarcer, making IPv6 capable networks an urgent matter for businesses. As a pioneer in this field, IIJ will continue to promote IPv6 compatibility in its services and on its network, to promote the development of the Internet, and to provide our customers with a more convenient network and enjoyable Internet experience.

  • (*1) The next-generation Internet protocol. It is based on the existing Internet protocol IPv4 but provides a larger address space and additional security functions.
  • (*2) Some models will need to be replaced.
