TOKYO--March 17, 2009--Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced the release of the IIJ IPv6 Transition Support Solution, a consulting and training program package that assists customers in their transition to the IPv6(*)protocol.

The IIJ IPv6 Transition Support Solution consists of a comprehensive range of consulting services--from an initial survey of the network environment to the creation of an IPv6 implementation plan, and support for the design, building, and operation of the network--to assist customers in the transition to the IPv6 protocol as the IPv4 address space is depleted. It also includes a training program for the network administrators and other employees to ensure the smooth operation of the network after the transition to IPv6.

IIJ has led the industry in promoting the adoption of IPv6 through the introduction of Japan's first commercial IPv6 trial service in 1999 and the regular announcement of IPv6 compatibility of IIJ's services and network equipment beginning in January 2009. IIJ has also been providing technical information and support to major manufacturers and other corporations on an individual basis to assist them in their transition to IPv6. Using this experience, IIJ has created the IIJ IPv6 Transition Support Solution to meet our customers' needs for consulting and training in this area.

IIJ will continue the transition of the company's own services and equipment to IPv6 and provide the accumulated knowledge to our customer's to assist them in their transition to IPv6 and to support the spread of the Internet.

Background

The standard Internet protocol currently in use world wide is IPv4. This protocol provides 4.3 billion IP addresses, which are used to connect to the Internet. However, as the number of Internet users world wide increases unabated, we can expect that in a short span of years, the available stock of IP addresses will be completely used up. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications announced in a report in June 2008 that the stock of international IP addresses will run out between mid 2010 and early 2012, and that new IP addresses will run out in Japan between early 2011 and mid 2013. As broadband use spreads throughout the world, IPv4 address consumption will increase, and in order for the Internet to continue to expand, the world will have to convert to the IPv6 protocol which provides much larger address space.
