2009 Press Releases
IIJ to Release Commercial Version of IIJ Earthquake Early Warnings Distribution Service
March 05, 2009
TOKYO--March 5, 2009--Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced the release of the IIJ Earthquake Early Warnings Distribution Service as an optional, free service offered as part of enterprise-level Internet access services.
The service, which had been offered as a beta service starting in October 2007, receives earthquake early warnings released by Japans Meteorological Business Support Center (JMBSC) through a dedicated line straight into the IIJ Earthquake Early Warnings Distribution System, after which it is distributed immediately to customers via the Internet. The earthquake early warnings system detects seismic waves at monitoring points close to the center of an earthquake and then quickly estimates certain aspects of the event, such as the seismic center, intensity, and strength at certain distances from the center. With this early warning system, IIJ customers can start initiating business continuation and risk management plans before the earthquake's destructive shear waves arrive, reducing the potential damage.
Below is a list of service highlights.
Redundant systems provide high availability
A high level of availability is established through end-to-end redundancy, with direct connections to both the A system and B system at the Japan Meteorological Business Support Center, and redundant distribution servers located at data centers in two locations. Warnings are distributed over IIJ's back-bone network to ensure stable, high-speed delivery.
Test alerts possible for each customer
Connections are tested each time a new terminal is added to the system or when the settings of a terminal are changed. The service does not use multicast distribution, enabling test alerts to be sent at the date and time specified by each customer.
Health-check function provided at the distribution server
The distribution server can check the status of the connection with each receiving terminal through a health check function that resides on the distribution server. The health check conforms to the Japan Meteorological Agency's standard format, and it detects changes in the connection status and notifies the customer. The health-check status can be monitored at a dedicated support webpage. (Expected release in June 2009)
