IIJ to Add New Security Features to IIJ Secure Remote Access

Terminal authentication features and hot-standby features bolster security and redundancy

March 11, 2008

TOKYO--March 11, 2008--Internet Initiative Japan Inc.(IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced the addition of new features on the IIJ proprietary remote access service, IIJ Secure Remote Access. These new features include terminal authentication, digital certificate verification, and similar security functions, as well as hot-standby functions.

IIJ Secure Remote Access enables customers to remotely access mail server and other corporate servers inside the corporate firewall. It provides a secure remote access environment through strict access control for each user and encrypted communications

These new features give additional protection against data leaks, viruses, and other threats associated with remote access, and they bolster the conventional user ID and password authentication system with terminal authentication and EAP (using digital certificates and one-time password products). Used in tandem with the IIJ Mobile service, which controls the transmission route through connecting-device and connecting-destination restriction options, these features create a robust remote access environment.

The new features are described in more detail below.

Terminal Authentication

This feature authenticates the connecting device using its MAC address. Computers that are not registered in advance will not be allowed to access the network, and this creates an even more secure environment. No additional software is required to be installed on all computers to use terminal authentication, and MAC addresses can be registered automatically through the browser, so there is no additional administrative overhead and security is strengthened.

EAP(*) Authentication Protocol Compatibility

EAP can now be used as the authentication protocol when connecting via VPN. In addition to one-time password products and corporate authentication servers, digital certificates are used to encrypt transmissions and thus increase security.

Hot Standby Feature

Hot standby is now available as a standby option. In the event that the primary remote access server fails, the system switches to the standby service automatically, minimizing outages due to system failures, and thus providing a stable remote access environment.

IIJ will continue to add new services and features for corporate customers and support the customer's network environment.

  • (*)EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol):
EAP is a protocol used to implement a variety of authentication methods in PPP or Ethernet. The most common authentication method is EAP-TLS, in which authentication is effected by issuing digital certificates to both client and server.

IIJ Secure Remote Access

IIJ Secure Remote Access enables customers to remotely access mail services and other corporate servers inside the corporate firewall. IIJ's proprietary remote access server, ID Gateway, is set up as the customer's Internet gateway, and the ID Gateway enforces strict control of the authorized servers and protocols for each user group, thus enabling secure communications with the company. This protocol is compatible with L2TP/IPsec and PPTP or SSL VPN connections, enabling the easy creation of a secure remote access environment regardless of the remote users' environment.
